Built in 1967 at the site of Salaspils concentration camp (1941-1944), the heavy sculptural volumes scattered over the 25 hectares of the monument's frozen site, weigh heavily upon the soil, and leave an indelible mark on the souls of those who pass under the slanted gate, the enormous concrete wedge precariously piercing the ground.

The inscription on its scarred surface says "The earth moans beyond this gate"...

I took these photographs in December of 2005 while visiting my grandfather Gregors. That winter, he was on his deathbed.
